In addition to her remarkable clinical achievements, Dr. Legato served as scientific advisor to the Office of Research on Women's Health at the NIH from 1995 to 1998, an effort for which she received a Service Award in 2000. She was appointed Professor Emerita of Clinical Medicine in 1998, marking a career that is distinguished by her tireless dedication to advancing medical science.

In 1993, Dr. Legato founded the Partnership for Women’s Health at Columbia University, which eventually became the Foundation for Gender-Specific Medicine in 2006. The Foundation has been instrumental in promoting public awareness and supporting scientific research by young investigators in the groundbreaking field of gender-specific medicine. Dr. Legato’s work has had a transformative impact on how healthcare providers understand and treat both men and women, emphasizing the unique aspects of medical treatment and care across genders.

Dr. Legato's significant accomplishments have also earned her an honorary doctorate from the University of Panama in 2015, in recognition of her pioneering efforts in gender-specific medicine. Currently, she continues to share her expertise as an adjunct professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University.
